Several years ago, David Sutherland was the main editor and publisher of a literary Web 'zine, Recursive Angel. RA published cutting edge poetry, fiction, and graphics. I was one of the poetry editors for RA then.
David Sutherland is starting Recursive Angel again. I (Gene Doty) am managing editor, responsible for selecting poetry. Before writing briefly about "what I want," here two important points:
- The URL for Recursive Angel is www.recursiveangel.org. That org is crucial, as there's an online gambling site, the URL of which ends com. So, if you wind up there, just change "com" to "org" and you're good to go.
- Submission to Recursive Angel is through a service called "Submishmash." There's a submission link on the site: please submit only through the link on the site. Do not send poems directly to me. (If you have trouble with Submishmash, please do write me. My email address for RA is [email protected].
Now, "what do I want?" Poetry that challenges the reader, that pushes the envelope somewhere in some way. There are no formal specifications nor desired content. Send the strongest poetry you have, knowing that RA is competitive. (And pays a little bit too.) Ghazals will be considered along with other forms, but RA is not merely an extension of The Ghazal Page.
Unfortunately, the earlier issues of RA have gone into the great cyber-nowhere, so I don't have examples for you. However, examples might keep you from sending a poem that would be successful with RA.
